Creativity and innovation in the Flona de Caxiuanã

In 1993, the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi established a base of scientific research within the National Forest of Caxiuanã, in the municipalities of Melgaço and Portel in the state of Pará. In order to strengthen the link with local communities and to conserve their social role, CNPq / MPEG, signed an agreement between the main research and development institutions of the region, with the objective of implementing one Sustainable Development Program. The agreement, signed on March 6, 1998, officialized the partnership between the Goeldi / ECFPn Museum and the Federal University of Pará. Currently, the PPGEAP works in the Caxiuanã Forest Research Program, which aims to contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of the forest and improve the quality of life of populations. It has as its central axis the promotion of environmental education and citizenship and proposes to elaborate didactic material, the accomplishment of Science Olympiads, the implementation of a multimedia room, the training of teachers in the communities of Caxiuanã, Pedreira, Laranjal, Camuin Lake, Island of Earth, Pracupi and Cariá in the National Forest of Caxiuanã. Income generation is intended to be achieved through the production of handicrafts and the improvement of family farming. It also proposes to improve the social organization of communities.

Comic Strip Production

In order to promote the basic education of students from low-income communities, the research program developed the Vida de Camarão project. The initiative aims to distribute to the municipal, state and federal schools of the coastal zone one of the comic books about prawns. It is based on the natural history of freshwater and marine shrimps living in the estuaries of the Brazilian Amazon, visualized by one kid who, in a dream, accompanies all the dynamics of these species since they are in the larva stage, until become young, reproduce and continue the life cycle, highlighting all their similarities and differences throughout life. In the final outcome, the reader chooses the destination of the shrimp, if there is or in the ecological awareness of the people in the exploitation of natural resources. The main purpose of the publication of this title is the dissemination of the information contained therein, especially for the low-income population that depends on this natural resource to survive or that in some way acts on it. For this, the free distribution of this title will be made to the municipal and state schools of the cities located in the coastal zone of Pará, as well as some libraries located in Belém and other cities, such as the library of UFPA, MPEG, UEPA, UFRA, IFET and Algones associations of fishermen.
